Dial-Up Internet Frustration
Solved By
New Accelerator Technology
Dial-Up users gain access to speed thanks to Propel®
July 30, 2002, San Jose, CA: Propel Software Corporation, a company
dedicated to solving the consumer frustrations associated with using the
Internet, today announced the launch of Propelā Accelerator, the fastest way
to surf the Web over a dial-up connection, allowing users to surf up to five
times faster.
"While broadband promises to be the standard in the future, the majority of
Web surfing will continue for some time to be via dial-up," comments Steve
Kirsch, Founder and CEO of Propel. "In fact, according to a recent Morgan
Stanley research report, over 50 million people in the US today browse the
Internet using a dial-up connection."1
Kirsch continued, "Propel is targeting one of the biggest pain points for
consumers - the amount of time it takes to load a Web page over a dial-up
connection."
Dial-Up Isn't Going To Disappear Overnight
The slow pace of broadband adoption can be attributed to several factors,
including an economic downturn, the high cost of broadband, and the
consolidation of providers causing fewer choices for consumers, according to
a recent study conducted by ARS, Inc2 .
"Considering the economic climate, and the state of the industry, Propel is
a cost effective and instantly deployable way to enjoy faster browsing,
without committing to a broadband solution," said Kirsch.
Available at an introductory price of $4.95 per month or for $49.95 for 12
months, Propel Accelerator is a subscription service available for PC users
via www.propel.com. It can be instantly deployed anywhere there is a phone
line, requires no new hardware, and works seamlessly with most existing ISP
services - including AOL, AT&T WorldNet, Earthlink, Juno, NetZero, and MSN.
Speed Up Your Dial-Up!sm
Propel Accelerator provides acceleration by leveraging the following
techniques:
 | Content Compression. Propel Accelerator delivers text and
graphics more efficiently, using a proprietary compression technology that
significantly reduces the size of Web pages and page elements sent to your
browser. For example, only text that has changed since you last loaded the
page, and not the entire page, will be transmitted over your modem.
|
 | Page Caching. Propel Accelerator intelligently retains and
re-uses Web pages and page elements, including dynamic content and
graphics that have previously been sent to the user's PC. Propel's caching
technology goes far beyond the cache built in to web browsers and other
caching products in several ways. First, Propel's technology can use
fragments from pages already in its cache to speed the downloading of new
pages, and uses advanced cache validation techniques to prevent out of
date content from being displayed. Also, Propel Accelerator can quickly
verify if the actual content of the image has changed and reloads the
image only if needed. Because of its powerful and innovative use of
caching, Propel Accelerator reaches full speed after only a few visits to
your favorite web sites. |
 | Persistent Connections.
Propel Accelerator uses proprietary techniques to carefully manage and
optimize the communication between the PC modem and Propel's network
through a persistent connection. This eliminates the time wasted to
re-establish dropped connections. |
