The
city was founded on May 16, 1703, by the Julian calendar (May 27 new
style). On that day the fortress of Saint Petersburg (the city of
St. Peter) was laid on Zayachiy Island, in the delta of the Neva
River, by the order of Peter I (who reigned 1689 - 1725).

River is an essential part of St. Petersburg's world-famous charm.
Many generations of locals and visitors to the city have been

State Hermitage occupies six magnificent buildings situated along
the embankment of the River Neva, right in the heart of
St.Petersburg. The leading role in this unique architectural
ensemble is played by the Winter Palace, the residence of the
Russian tsars that was built to the design of Francesco Bartolomeo
Rastrelli in 1754-62.
